about this wine
Quivira Vineyards’ Grenache offers juicy flavor with depth on the palate; a balance of New World flavor and Old World sensibility. This offering is fully estate bottled, and our vineyards experience a Mediterranean climate that prevents this finicky grape from ripening too early. After the heat spikes of late summer, Quivira’s winegrowing team surgically picked each block at the perfect maturity. Dry Creek Valley’s warm days, cool nights, and well-draining soils provide the ideal terroir for Grenache. That is why, over two decades ago, we strategically planted our estate to Grenache clones that trace their lineage to Château Beaucastel.
at the winery
Partial whole-cluster fermentation, a classic Pinot Noir winemaking technique, is utilized to balance tannins and add high-toned red fruit aromatics. The 2014 vintage used 15% whole-cluster fermentation. Quivira exclusively barrel ages in the same large casks that originated from Southern Rhône. Grenache’s strawberry aromatics are preserved in the 600 and 900 gallon French oak Foudres. Grenache’s fragile perfumes are highly sensitive to oxidation, and thus the Foudres’ large surface to volume ratio is critical to maximizing the expression of our estate’s terroir.
in the glass
Dark brooding fruit of bing cherry, wild strawberry preserves and black raspberry are accented by subtle herbal notes. Palate and texture are rich and full with a dense, flavorful mid-palate. The medium body and captivating aromatics make Quivira’s Grenache a perfect wine for lovers of Pinot Noir. Grenache even pairs with a much wider range of foods as it is not so easily overpowered.
