QUIVIRA MAGNUM TRIO
Dry Creek Valley
2020 Black Boar Zinfandel
A dual-vineyard estate wine based on the rich, opulent fruit from the dynamic duo of Anderson Ranch and Wine Creek Ranch. The wines name was inspired by the wild boars that are apt to roam our hillside vineyards who simply can't resist our tasty fruit. They are wild and sauvage like our impeccable, bold Zinfandel.
The color hints at an older wine with a garnet center which fades to a brick red rim. But the nose is youthful with lots of blueberries, blackberries, currant and black pepper. Sage dominates the herbal notes with a touch of roasted tomato. The palate has powdery tannin and acidity up front that is quickly overtaken by waves of dark fruit flavors. Blackberry and Blueberries covered in fall spices of mace, coriander and hints of cinnamon. If you can wait, at the back of the long finish will pop up wisps bright Bing Cherry. This wine evokes thoughts of Trippa alla Toscana or Cassoulet on cold nights with a fire in the hearth.
2018 Montepulciano Sangiovese
This is a wine one can easily enjoy on its own. Medium ruby in color, a medley of red/dark fruit explodes with each delightful sip. The clonal combination of Sangiovese Grosso and Montepulciano #10 results in flavors of blueberry, raspberry, fresh currant, and a toasty nuttiness accented with thyme and marjoram. All of this is highlighted by a refreshing bright acidity. Smooth tannins lead to a lovely leather-tinged finish. Like a velvet glove, this wine is strong and plush with a firm grip. It will hold well through 2028-2029. This wine would be an amazing accompaniment to medium-rare ribeye, braised short ribs, or Pasta Bolognese. For cheese lovers, we suggest aged Pecorino or Parmigiano-Reggiano.
2020 Sauvignon Blanc Alder Grove
The wine is pale straw in color and day bright. The nose is filled with white rose, walnut, almond skin, and apricot pit. In the mouth, this Sauvignon blanc really delivers with flavors of Apricot, Star Fruit, and bitter herbs. Further along comes minerality reminiscent of wet river rock.
The wine is all at once rich and nutty but also refreshing due to the rifling acidity. Kind of a paradox that begs for a nice wedge of French cheese. The finish is substantial with flavors of crunchy Asian pears and a hint of bitter arugula.
