2014 Flight Zinfandel

about this wine
This elegant, single-vineyard bottling is sourced from an old kiwi orchard. Today, our Anderson Ranch produces spectacular Zinfandel and Flight is made exclusively from this prolific vineyard’s fruit. Anderson Ranch is planted on a high bench, on Lytton Springs Road, separating Dry Creek Valley from Alexander Valley. Together, Viticulturist Ned Horton and Winemaker Hugh Chappelle, methodically harness a Zinfandel with an undeniable verve.
at the winery
Anderson Ranch’s sandy soils are well-draining, which requires active deficit irrigation tactics so that the vines are stressed precisely at the right times. In 2014, five passes through the vineyard enabled Quivira’s winegrowing team to surgically harvest each section at the perfect maturity. A portion of this wine is aged in 600 and 900 gallon French oak Foudres to allow tannin development and aroma retention.
in the glass
Brooding dark fruit is at the forefront this vintage, with Flight’s more typical red fruit layered underneath. Impeccably ripe coastal blackberries mingle with holiday spice cake and the slightest touch of subtle toasty oak. On the palate the red and dark fruit are more evenly matched with both lingering pleasantly in the highly flavorful finish. Uncommonly rich and full-bodied on the palate this vintage, yet Anderson Ranch’s amazing natural acidity keeps everything bright and fresh. Flight stands up beautifully to boldly flavored dishes including most classic comfort-food favorites.
